  • Faith-Based Organisations Vital To Youth Development Efforts

Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan, has underscored the pivotal role of faith-based organisations in shaping the future of Barbados’ youth.

Mr. Jordan made the comments recently as he addressed the Third Annual Symposium for Faith-Based Organisations, at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. Speaking under the theme Building Our Young People: Our Future, Our Legacy, the Minister described the initiative as a national call to action.

“This theme speaks not only to aspiration, but to responsibility. It reminds us that the work we do today in shaping the character, skills, and values of our young people will determine the strength, stability, and prosperity of our nation tomorrow,” he stated.

Mr. Jordan noted that while young people possess immense potential, many face challenges, including social pressures, economic uncertainty, and exposure to negative influences.

“If we are honest, the question before us is not whether our young people have potential. The question is whether we are building the systems of support necessary for that potential to flourish,” he said.

Highlighting Government’s commitment to strengthening youth development, the Minister pointed to the establishment of a $5 million annual fund to support faith-based organisations with impactful programmes.

“But funding is not the goal. Funding is merely the instrument. Impact is the goal. Transformation is the goal,” he stressed.

He explained that the initiative is intended to produce tangible outcomes, including reduced youth involvement in crime, increased participation in training and employment opportunities, and stronger family and community networks.

In addition, Mr. Jordan called for greater collaboration among stakeholders. “Building our young people requires intentional collaboration. It demands that Government, faith-based organisations, families, and communities work in unison,” he said.

He also encouraged organisations to strengthen their capacity to design and implement structured programmes, noting that good intentions must be supported by planning, accountability, and measurable targets.

Looking ahead, he urged participants to remain focused on long-term impact. “Years from now, we must be able to look back and see clear results, …stronger families and safer communities,” he said.

Minister Jordan added that the Symposium should serve as a catalyst for action, encouraging stakeholders to transform ideas into sustainable initiatives that will positively shape the lives of young people across Barbados.
