Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan, has outlined the importance of game fishing to Barbados’ tourism product, economic activity, and blue economy development.
Addressing the launch of the 2026 Republic Bank Sir Charles Williams International Game Fishing Tournament last Friday, Mr. Jordan said the event represented far more than a sporting activity.
“Game fishing is a sport, …but it is also a tourist attraction, …it is an economic driver,” he stated, noting that the tournament continues to attract local and international participants while supporting national development.
He added that the sport also plays a social role, encouraging camaraderie among participants and helping to develop skills among new and younger anglers.
Minister Jordan also mentioned the significance of Barbados’ blue economy, stressing that the sustainable management of these marine resources remains a top priority for Government.
“This is not just sport, but this is also the provision of food,” he said, pointing to the need for responsible fishing practices to ensure long-term sustainability.
He noted that initiatives such as catch-and-release practices and minimum catch weights were critical to protecting fish stocks, while marine protected areas and the rehabilitation of coral reefs were also essential components of Government’s environmental strategy.
The Labour Minister also pointed to an extensive suite of maritime legislation aimed at strengthening the sector, including provisions to ensure decent work standards within the maritime space under the Maritime Labour Convention.
“Our responsibility as Government…is to encourage non-governmental organisations to pursue their passions once their passions connect to the objectives of the nation,” he said.
He added that Government could not act alone, and partnerships with organisations such as the Barbados Game Fishing Association, along with support from sponsors, were critical to the success of initiatives like the tournament and the sustainable development of the sector.
