  • Barbados Highlights Labour & Social Development Progress At ILO Conference

The Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan, has highlighted Barbados’ commitment to decent work, social protection and workforce development while addressing delegates at the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.

During his address earlier today, Minister Jordan noted that Barbados continues to pursue “a people-centred development agenda that places social dialogue, decent work, social protection, inclusion and resilience at the heart of national development”.

He outlined several government initiatives aimed at preparing Barbadians for the future of work, including the Construction Gateway, Fishing and Farming Gateway, Hospitality Gateway, National First Jobs Initiative, Job Start Plus and the National Transformation Initiative.

“Through these initiatives, we are equipping workers – particularly young people – with the skills and experience needed to access quality employment and participate in emerging sectors of the economy,” the Minister stated.

The Labour Minister went on to highlight some of Barbados’ recent achievements, such as increases to the national minimum wage, the introduction of paid paternity leave, the extension of paid maternity leave, and the enactment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2025. He said these measures demonstrate the government’s commitment to social justice and inclusion.

Minister Jordan also urged countries to embrace the opportunities presented by technological advancement and climate adaptation. “Let us embrace this moment of choice. Let us harness the rapid development in technology and the challenges presented by changes in our climate,” he said.
