  • Minister Jordan: Workers’ Rights Must Be Protected

Minister of Labour, Social Security and the Third Sector, Colin Jordan, is reminding Barbadians that the rights and protections workers enjoy today, are the direct result of centuries of struggle, and this must be actively safeguarded and strengthened.

Speaking recently at the May Day celebration hosted by the Barbados Workers’ Union, at the National Botanical Gardens, the Labour Minister traced the evolution of the labour movement from early uprisings to modern-day achievements, stressing that progress was not easy nor accidental.

“It is important for us to remember or to learn that people died in this cause…so that we are in a position to be able to celebrate,” Mr. Jordan said, noting that workers’ gains were secured through sacrifice, solidarity, and sustained advocacy.

He identified key milestones in Barbados’ labour history, including early worker uprisings, the formation of the Workingmen’s Association in the 1920s, the establishment of the Barbados Nursing Association in 1936, and the events of 1937 that ultimately led to the creation of the Barbados Workers’ Union.

The Minister emphasised that while conditions have improved, the core objectives of the labour movement remain unchanged.

“We are still fighting to make sure that there is dignity in work…, that workers and their inherent humanity is recognised…and that the gains that have been achieved…are protected and consolidated,” he stated.

Mr. Jordan pointed to significant legislative and policy advancements achieved over the years, including social security protections, maternity and paternity leave, holidays with pay, non-discrimination in the workplace, equal pay for work of equal value, the national minimum wage, and occupational safety and health standards.

“These are achievements we celebrate today…, achievements that workers have earned, fought for, and secured over many years,” he said.

He also noted that modern labour relations are increasingly characterised by collaboration, with Government, workers, and responsible employers working together to advance decent work.

“As a Government, we recognise that gains must always be protected, but also that partnership is critical as we move forward,” the Minister added.

He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening labour protections and advancing policies that support workers, while acknowledging the continued role of unions in advocating for fair and equitable conditions.

“As we celebrate today, we honour the struggles of the past, recognise the progress made, and commit to continuing the work to ensure that all workers in Barbados are treate
