Barbados Gender Focused

Barbados is the first country in the Caribbean and Latin American region to be gender audited by the International Labour Office (ILO), and preliminary findings reveal that the Ministry of Labour is doing well.

In a meeting with Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, the ILO gender audit team disclosed while the results of the investigation were pending, the ministry was gender focused and not just "women focused".

The ILO gender audit team is here conducting research on the role of gender in the planning and politics of the Ministry of Labour, its departments, stakeholders, partners and partner ministries.

The team's research also includes the mainstreaming of gender into daily work, impressions and perceptions of gender, the shifting of gender roles and its effects on men, the level of gender awareness in the workplace and confusion about terms "gender" and "women".

The ILO team and the Minister of Labour discussed the advancement of Barbadian women in the society and workplace as well as the challenges facing young men in the society.

Realising that these challenges were not limited to Barbados alone, the ILO team and Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo talked about the role of vocational training in self-actualisation for young men and young people in general.

Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo said she was looking forward to the results and recommendations coming out the ILO gender audit.
