Labour Department Speaks on Overtime

The Labour Department has issued a reminder to employers and employees about the rules relating to overtime work and payment as shopping for the Christmas holidays moves into full swing.

It issued guidelines that would affect employees who might be expected to work overtime during this period and many part-time workers who could be employed as businesses cope with the long shopping hours.

The department reminded employers that while cooperation on overtime was expected, it was optional.

In a release through the Government Information Service, the department stated that the rates for overtime applied to any work done after eight hours in a workday and more than five days in a work week. They are one-and-a-half times the normal figure and double pay on bank holidays.

Barring unforeseen factors, it added, adequate notice should be given by employers of expected overtime and employees should give reasonable notice where assigned overtime could not be met. (BGIS/ BW)
