Labour Minister and US Official Hold Discussions

Government’s efforts at maintaining job levels during the current financial crisis were among the issues discussed recently when Labour Minister, Senator Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, met with the new Chief of Political and Economic Affairs at the US Embassy, Nicholle Manz, at the Warrens Office Complex recently.

Senator Byer Suckoo said Government was very concerned about the impact of the crisis on Barbadian families and was making every effort to ensure the country returned to the path of economic growth.

The Labour Minster outlined some of the challenges facing Government due to the “slowdown” in the world economy, noting that in her own Ministry the external placement programme in Canada and the United States was severely impacted by the downturn.

Senator Byer Suckoo also took the opportunity to inform Ms. Manz about the local industrial relations climate, the role and function of the Social Partnership and the Labour Ministry’s efforts at human resource development through training.

Both parties also discussed the decent work agenda as set out by the International Labour Organisation, and issues related to the local education sector and gender.

The Labour Minister also pointed out that Sexual Harassment and Anti-Discrimination legislation for the workplace was presently in draft form and labour officials were working to get these Bills to Parliament very soon.
