With the Christmas season now in high gear, the Labour Department is reminding employers and employees of some of the rules related to working overtime.


Many shops will be open for extended hours during the festive period and while employees may be expected to work longer hours, persons are reminded that overtime is not compulsory.

Safety And Health Reminders


The Occupational Safety and Health Section of the Labour Department is reminding employers and employees of some of the requirements of the Safety and Health at Work (SHaW) Act, which was passed in January this year.


Under the Accidents and Occupational Disease (Notification) Act, Cap 338, all employers are reminded that they must notify the Chief Labour Officer forthwith of every accident arising out of and during the course of employment which results in the injured being away from their normal duties for more than three days.

Byer Suckoo Says Prevention Better Than Cure


The current economic crisis should not be used as an excuse to neglect occupational safety and health issues in the workplace.


This is the view of Minister of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development, Senator Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, who stressed that greater emphasis should be placed on reducing the risks of both physical and psychological workplace hazards.

Guidelines for the Agricultural Sector


The Labour Department has released Guidelines for the Agricultural Sector. These guidelines can be used by agricultural enterprises who wish to develop a safety and health policy in compliance with the Safety and Health at Work Act, Cap 356. It is hoped that these guidelines will provide the impetus for the improvement of safety and health practices in this sector.
