  • Child Protection and Safeguarding laws need updating.
  • Introduce a foreign language in the primary (French or Chinese), this is an introduction of conversation and widely used words and phrases.  The world is getting smaller.
  • Introduce whiteboards to the classrooms to bring teaching methods into the 21st century allowing more student participation within the classroom.
  • Libraries – Update to reflect the needs of the students. These need to be technology driven.  With the expansion of schools offering 6th form provision school libraries need to be adequately stocked with relevant materials.

Books for the visually impaired and family reading activities for example there should be a wall or area where young people’s art work could be displayed twice per year. (Themed entries - portraits, landscapes, contemporary etc.)

  • Our young men and women are lacking a purpose and need to be reengaged and redirected.  There are too many NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training).  Whilst academic qualifications are important not every child is suited to economics, biology or law etc. This needs nipping in the bud before they reach the below stage.  We can no longer boast of 98% literacy.
  • The youth should be able to achieve their full potential and provide for their families in the future. There was some mention of an agricultural project in the north somewhere.  This needs to be implemented/expanded and be driven by the youth to include new crops because food is the way to go.  We need a sustainable program of crop production for export and domestic use.  Our food bill is too high.  We should not be importing chicken and the quality of our stock of black belly sheep should be protected and improved as they are unique.
  • Institute a COMPULSORY apprenticeship program up to 18. No more liming.
  • An island beautification project – one group of youngsters per parish.  Target low income, high crime and unemployment areas to instil some pride.
  • A Coding competition – with a view to making Barbados the tech hub of the Caribbean. The tech sector is an important source of jobs and growth for the city's economy and it is vital that we continue to ensure that we can attract the very best talent and hopefully some investment.

- Tech & Engineering project – e.g.build a drone from recycled materials.

- An art and/or photography competition.

- A Defence Force program – discipline, survival, rescue, first aid.

  • If all else fails - There is the need for a youth offending team and a youth crime prevention programme.  You are referred to the programme If under the age of 18 and have been in trouble with the police, are ‘at risk’ of committing a crime or are involved in anti-social behaviour. A three year programme which if not satisfied comes with a heavy fine.
  • If you are placing social workers in each school there will be the need for uniformed and rigorous system of reporting and data protection.
