Good Afternoon,
Firstly, thank you for giving the public the opportunity to share ideas that can improve the functioning and effectiveness of government department and ministries. Let this platform simply not be one of all talk, and no action being taken.
Providing public feedback on if any suggestions have been truly considered and discussed would go a long way in letting us, Barbados, know that the time we put in to write out our ideas have not gone on deaf hears.
Now into the points I which to provide suggestions. I lived in Toronto, Canada for a brief time, and working in a public agency for a short stint I became aware of some organisation things they did which could potentially benefit us.
- Currently the Transport Board is stretched with vehicle shortage. While I don't know how it is across the island, I can only speak of what I observe in my community. The St. Jude's/ Workmans bus no longer comes to the end of the route, only twice a day possibly for the first and last bus. This has resulted persons in having to walk long to get to the main road or intersection. And when the private PSVs pass (which is only on the main road) they come close together. If there is discussion between the public and private PSVs then route schedules could be developed to allow all parties to hopefully profit, and have vehicles every hour for passengers. Also, if there would be coordination with times for those routes that intersect. The Toronto bus system does this great- when I had to switch routes, the other bus was there as soon as I got off, or the wait is very short. Posting at bus stops on the sign, or shelter, what buses pass there would be great. Especially for tourists who wish to take the bus.
- This is a thought- what if there is an open source road map network of Barbados that would allow persons to 'pin' where road maintenance is needed. A scale can be created that persons can pin a street and select the level of attention it requires, write the exact location and select the type of problem there is, and provide a brief description.
Thank you once again for this new avenue of sharing.
