Before any major road work project is embarked upon some level of discussion should be had with the utility companies namely the water authority and natural gas. On so many occasions shortly after a road is paved, the utility company employees would have a need to dig up the road surface. Hence, all efforts should be well coordinated so that actions are not counterproductive.
An alternative material should be explored other than what is currently being used. From observation the sturdiest roads in Barbados are the spring garden highway (concrete) and a portion of Horse Hill (volcanic rock).
I have also noticed that the concrete barrier which is place at the edge of the road to keep in the surface material is sometimes missing. As a result over time these roads start to break off from the edges and the entire surface becomes compromised.
Recommendations:
- Proper coordination of road repair projects.
- Use an alternative material to what is currently being used.
- Utilize the concrete barriers at the edge of the road.

There are many companies in the UK with the expertise and equipment to make Barbados’ roads the best in the Caribbean.
Even a small team on a contract can be very effective.
Also, motorway lighting is important for the lifeblood of our nation’s Tourism Industry.
No tourist used to night-time motoring in their native country wants to hire a vehicle and can only drive it in daylight. Please maintain the roadside lighting, and highlight the kerbside so that the motorist know where the road ends and the kerb begins.
Make Barbados a night-time society also.
