I would like to make a suggestion on Prison Reform.  I really do not know what is done in prison.  I know the Church does go in and have services for them, and I know they do some art.

My suggestion is, for what it is worth, is that I would like to see some of the petty offenders have a different form of prison time.  I would like each prisoner to get one-on-one counselling with a professional, to be assessed and to see where they can be helped.  If some emotional healing takes place, that would be of benefit to their rehabilitation.

I would like to see some work gangs formed, that do community service as their penalty.  We would not pay them, but this would be part of their giving back to society, and helping our nation.  The work gangs may do painting on Government institutions, schools etc., weeding/gardening and such like.  This work will help offset the cost of keeping them.  I want to keep them together, so they can go to work on the prison van in a timely manner, and finish the day's work in a disciplined way, just as how it is expected in the work world.  In the evening after dinner, I would like to see some churches be invited in, to speak to them on things like relationships, parenting, work ethic, budgeting, dealing with anger, - various life skills that would help them to be better people when they come out.  This idea is to try to help them be better people, to give back to our country which does have a financial value, and that they would have less time just sitting around in prison.  I am thinking that this can be a monthly rotation.  Every month, it would start, so the group will go through the various teachings to cover different aspects in that month.  And then the next month, another group would start.  The rehabilitation is an important part of the process.

I know this may not work on everyone, but if we got a 50% or more success rate, we would be doing well.

I know as it is, community service is given out as a penalty, but I also know there are times, when persons do not show up to do their service, or do a poor job performance, or have a bad attitude to what they do.  That is why I am suggesting something more structured, and hopefully more beneficial.

I find there is a systematic way to make society or a country feel like a prison. For example the youth feel like they are in a prison if their parents cannot provide for them so they most likely would become involved in illegal activity. A country can become like a prison if some entity is "systematically attacking it's niches (beaches, tourism, cropover, sugar industry and so on...).

I do not want to go into a conspiracy theory but I ask myself who would benefit from destroying a country to then claim it as their own... for war... is colonisation still an act today... but to be realistic the events surrounding our economic crisis do not add up so sometimes you have to have a view of the outside and look in to find out what do you see. Hurricane season is a different story.

The Court system needs to be evaluated, assessed and monitored.

Just a thought.

Best Regard's

Nikki

Good Afternoon Sir/Madam:

Below please find some of my suggestions/ideas which I hope you would take into consideration.

(1)    Schools go on holiday Thursday 5th. July, 2018. As from Monday 9th. July, 2018, the inmates at Dodds HMP, should be shackled and brought out to all learning institutions to repair, replace and rebuild if necessary, all school buildings which are in need of such repairs. I am sure there are inmates with all types of disciplines at the facility such as masonry, carpentry, plumbing and electrical. By doing this, schools would be ready for start on 10 September, 2018.

(2)    A lot of the signs around the Island are covered or hidden because of overgrown bush/shruberry. Gutters need to be cleaned and signs need to be repainted. Again, this is a task that can be easily undertaken by the inmates.

(3) Persons who appear in Court for petty crimes, such as stealing a cake of soap or a bottle of perfume, should be given 90 days of community service rather than being sent to Dodds HMP. We have enough Government buildings to clean/maintain and they can fit in here.

Good afternoon

I agree to some extent to the suggestions submitted by Ann Butcher.  However rather than use inmates or sentence those persons who are found guilty of petty crimes such as shoplifting, fighting, possession of small quantities of drugs etc, their punishment should be hours of community service which can entail de-bushing common property (e.g. roadways) and clearing drains across the island; and, repainting the schools.
