Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter because i very much feel that Barbados needs a clean-up very desperately. i think that Barbados should have an "Eleven Week" clean up initiative focusing on one parish each week over a two and a half month span.

An elected member of parliament for each constituency can rally up their constituents and have one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) to clean up the schools, their parish and also do any debushing necessary. I am aware that their are bigger parishes such as St. Phillip an St. Michael that will need more time, so they can start from the Friday night and finish on Sunday.

For the parish that is judged as the cleanest can receive a plaque stating their achievement in which they can keep for one year until the competition resumes the for the next.

Yours Faithfully,

Kobe Hutson

In light of all the renewed enthusiasm among voters,  I think it would be wonderful to keep up the momentum by continuing to engage people in the constituencies.  Things which cost little or no money such as neighborhood clean ups, tree planting and beautification, service clubs adopting a poor neighborhood for a year as a pilot project.  Many of the environmental issues are about education.  Refuse, reduce, reuse,  recycle, and regenerate and changing behaviour.  Food production by seed saving, growing kitchen gardens again, composting are important and can be brought back from the past in a nostalgic way.

The service clubs may be under utililised particularly as it relates promotion of events.  Also many Barbadians do not know what the Kiwani's, Lion's, Soroptimist, BNPW, Optimists, and many church groups do for the country.  Perhaps you could get the Newspapers to highlight their work and encourage people to join their efforts.

I love Ideas 4 Barbados.

Congratulations.  I hope we stay engaged and pull this country around as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Sharen Lady Carmichael

Hi I have been here in Barbados for some time now, and I do some walking and it sadly to see all the trash that is along the road side and bus stops. I believe if there was trash cans at ALL bus stops it would help. And have all those that are in Jail or doing community service to pick up all the trash along the roadside supervise of course. This is a nice Island but very trashes 😟

  1. I’m sure that would help keep the rat population down also.

Good evening,

Littering is a serious problem. But more so, the mentality that leads to littering...

No. Let me correct myself - littering is a symptom of our problem. The problem is our attitude.

It's hard to teach children to be respectful of the environment, if they are going home to hear things like "you are too good to pick up garbage. you are not a maid".

I came across some videos recently that were quite eye-opening. If you google search "Japanese students cleaning" you will see what I mean. That search will show you many pictures and videos to show how 'clean up' is done in their schools.

I believe that to break our current mentality, we must start with the kids. This method should be implemented in all primary schools. Remember, many are learning other habits at home. So to make these better habits stick, (and stop them from throwing garbage out the car/bus window because their parents tell them to) 'cleaning up after ourselves' must be the way of life at school. For ALL. No exceptions.

Eventually it must be carried up into the secondary schools too. But the future generations must learn from young. So many problems can be solved and situations avoided if this is done properly.

Best regards,

Maria-Elena Farmer
