I would like to suggest that buildings in Bridgetown that are dilapidated and abandoned be uplifted with murals/street art. This is a successful beautification project in many city neighbourhoods (I have attached photos) and many times it leads to a revitalization of the entire area. The mural project should include not only Barbadian artists but also schools to encourage a sense of community.
The Pelican Village Craft Centre also needs to be revitalized as there are a lot of empty shops. The Centre should focus on products by local artisans and offer special events when cruise ships are in port, such as a farmer’s market, street art exhibitions, and musical performances. The Centre would benefit especially on weekends when many of the shops in Bridgetown are closed.

In 2028, Bridgetown will have reached its 400 year anniversary. Over the years, as commerce and activity increased, the City has become crowded, congested with vehicles and the buildings run down and becoming potential fire hazards. There is a need to address this and create a greener, cleaner City by 2050.
Here are my suggestions:
***A review must be made of sewage and drainage management in the City. Regular clearing of the drains and the Careenage in the City.
***Efforts should be made to explore ways of conserving greywater or rainwater to maintain toilets and water plants in the city. ***There is a need to make Bridgetown, a no-plastics and no Styrofoam zone. (National ban of these materials, with penalties for persons who continue to use them, accessibility and affordability to alternative plant based containers e.g. vegware).
***Food handlers, fruit/vegetable vendors and restaurants owners must adopt ways to reduce and reuse their waste i.e. organic food scraps, reuse of cooking oils and fats. This can be done with training and workshop and it will help eliminate the clogged drains which are so common in the most popular streets.
***Bridgetown roofs should be converted into gardens (which cool buildings) and their sides made into living walls. Solar panels should be installed to power offices and create backup energy in the City.
***Additionally, the time has come to reduce the flow of vehicular traffic which comes through the City. On the outskirts, high rise carparks should be constructed and persons working in the urban area can take tram, bike or walk to their destination. Bridgetown narrowed streets were not made for the heavy buses, trucks and cars which travel through the area each day.
***Lastly, there is a need for more green spaces, trees, plants, bike paths, play parks should be a signature feature of Bridgetown. This will encourage locals and visitors alike to spend more time in one of the oldest towns on the island.

What is currently the very centre of Bridgetown is a totally dull space which could be transformed into an exciting experience for tourist and locals alike.
Here are a few ideas for its transformation:
- bring the spectacular Zoave costumes of the defense force into the centre of Bridgetown by having guards,
In this costume, stand guard infront of the parliament buildings. At times during winter the full military band dressed
In these costumes should be present In the square for the changing of the guard.
This would be a spectacular attraction for tourists.
- Bring back the old Harbour Police "Nelson" costumes and have these individuals present in the square and along the boardwalk.
This would provide unique photo ops for tourists and enhance Bridgetown as a heritage site.
- Use Heroes Square as an impromptu setting for musicians, singers ,dancers and artists to show off their talents . In particular this space should be an outlet for fine arts students from The Community College and UWI to show off their talents.
- Have actors in period costume circulating in the Square, swing bridge and Broad st. to interact with tourists ,maintaining
their character at all times. These actors will have to be very familiar with the history of Bridgetown.

Good afternoon. I am of the view that there is need for a clean up campaign. This can be done through the schools social media and GIS. We are making the city into a slum. For example a walk through the bridge street mall to the van stand to look to your left and right is downright nasty. In the van stand itself on a sunny day is unhealthy and unsanitary. On a rainy day it is that much worse. I have even mentioned the music that is played all day In the van stand. The old Fairchild street market has become a public urinal and the smell of urine and faeces is ever present. These things to be highlighted with the hope that the people will stop these unhealthy and disgusting practices not for the sake of the tourist that visit our shores but the citizens who live here 365 days a year. I witness both the young and the indiscriminately disposing of garbage either from vehicles or from their person as a matter of course. We need to do much better .

I agree that Bridgetown needs a facelift. I am also appealing to Minister Bostic to take a tour of Kensington New Road and Beckles Avenue in the City. What used to be Harding's Shop and Guest House is now a derelict building with lots of garbage in the yard. This is a breeding site for rats and mosquitoes. That is also the road leading into Beckles Avenue, and that area is also in need of cleaning since items no longer needed by some residents are placed along the road and could attract rats.
This is a very thoughtful innovative suggestion that is (a) quickly accomplished ** (b) potentially nationally inclusive of the islands talents and (c) cost conscious
Considerations would be (a) the ownership of properties and the legal ramifications and (b) the safety of the artists doing the murals for the taller buildings (c) harmony of the murals and (d) longevity of the paints
Additionally, there would need to be a law to seriously address defacing of the murals by the indolent bajans who abound through the island
