POWER / ELECTRICITY
Barbados currently spends loads of foreign exchange in small electrical household appliances such as:
- Toasters
- Kettles
- Microwaves
- Blenders
- Irons
- Mixers
- And motorized equipment.
The above is not an exhaustive list but is just an example of a few.
The reason for the failure is burnt out motors due Barbados operation on 50 Hz and our equipment purchased being 60Hz.
Our 5oHz system was inherited from our colonization by the British, but somehow our shopping for these appliances is primarily the USA which is 60 Hz and will continue to be so because of ease of travel, ease of purchase and closeness to Barbados. Another is also the pricing available in the USA as opposed to Britain.
Based on the above, the Go9vernment needs to:
- Conduct a study to show how much foreign exchange is spent on these appliances on a yearly basis
- Conduct a study as to what it would cost for Barbados to convert its power system from 50 Hz to 60Hz
I am pretty sure that results would show that the average household swaps out about four (4) of these appliances on a yearly basis to a tune of approx.. 600.00 USD. With advent of going to 60 Hz, much foreign can be saved.
I do that this suggestion is favorably considered.
Thanks in advance for your prompt response and consideration.
