Produce more sugar for local consumption

I have been suggesting to many for years that Barbados provide majority of the sugar we as Barbadians consume. We export sugar and do not make a huge amount from it yet we import sugar. Instead of the huge import of sugar we can retain our own sugar and provide it for our citizens. I do not think we make enough for the entire country but it would reduce part of our import bill because the export on our sugar doesn't make very much.

Stop selling sugar at a loss and look for alternative streams for sugar and its by-products. We can have fruit flavoured sugar cane juice or fruit juices sweetened with sugar can juice. Much lower glycemic index and better for diabetics.
