Someone told me that it is believed that big acre farmers should provide food to export. They can choose to process the food as flour, or fresh or some other way of preserving food. Many backyard and small scale farmers across the island should provide food for the local markets. In this way, Barbados can make money by exporting and at the same time growing our owe  food help minimize the food import bill.

Sounds like a good idea but we have to implement serious ways to have our quality assurance regulations on par with International markets

Breadfruit

Every season, without doing any scientific study I would say that more than 80% of all breadfruit fall to the ground, rot, and go to waste.  My suggestion is that government offers a scholarship/small stipend for graduate student at UWI Cave Hill to study the canning of cooked breadfruit.  Once completed, Barbados should look at the canning and exportation of the canned breadfruit which I believe would be a big hit in the diaspora as well as to Barbadians and I general the Caribbean, when the fruit is not in season.  My suggestion is that the fruit should be bought by government from the populace, cooked and prepared, and canned by the school meals department.  The revenue received would then be pumped back into the school meals department to offset the finances in the provision of the school meals service.

Do you know that the grapefruit originated in Barbados.  Yet we are importing them from Florida and the supermarkets are selling them at $17.99 per/kg.  Grow grapefruits commercially and invest in R&D.  Grapefruit is known as a weight-loss supplement. It prevents certain medications from working.  Maybe it could be helpful in persons who have overdosed.  I don't know but why don't we find out?

Where does the name grapefruit come from?

A relatively recent addition to the citrus family of fruit, the grapefruit was first spotted on the island of Barbados in 1750. A cross between a pommel and aJamaican sweet orange, it was named for the way it grew in clusters like grapes.Jun 18, 2014

1. A tax should be imposed upon those imported food products which can be reliably produced in Barbados.

  1. Maximum utilization of agricultural land can be achieved, by requiring all owners of agricultural acreage to ensure an approved productive agricultural activity is carried out on them.   If this is not forthcoming, the acreage in question should be compulsory farmed by another approved farmer, at no rental cost.   In this respect, encouragement should be given to young first time entry farmers.

Sugar is almost dead in this island let’s hurry up and diversify to other crops weather we decriminalize marijuana and start growing it for medical purposes or start looking at other crops we need to do something fast as this is golden way to bring revenue back into the economy. Personally I believe we should go the marijuana route creating co-ops for growers to buy a limited amount of seedlings (5-10), grow the plant, then sell it back to the co-op for fair market value. This will help the average person out financially as they to will be able to become growers thereby stimulating the economy.

My idea(s) for Barbados  is for the  government of Barbados to cease the dumping of garbage such as old vehicle etc into the quarries of Barbados, and to use those large open spaces for the production of fish such as Tilapia etc. This can be a moment of opportunity to reduce the importation of  the said commodity whilst being a source of income through export.

Additionally, it can help to offset the high burden of cost to nationals during times of scarcity, this can be a method of food security. Fish is also a healthy substitute on the food pyramid.

The waste generated can be use for the production of food crops through the farming method of aquaponics. The limestone sub strata is already in place due to the formation of the island and need only to be overlaid with concrete.

The next idea which I would like to see implemented is the purchase of an area of fertile land mass twice the size of Barbados in the country of Guyana. This can be facilitated through the Caricom Single Market and Economy initiative.

I would like to submit a couple more initiatives but the forum is not open to those areas of study.

Regards,

Haldane Belle
