Investigation of accidents and occupational diseases is not about apportioning blame, neither is it about determining compensation levels. Parties are generally advised as to the appropriate course of action in pursuance of social security benefits and compensation.

The aims of investigations are:

• to determine the real causes of the accident; and
• to determine the measures which maybe implemented to minimise the risk of recurrence.
