Local Scholarships

The Higher Education Section of the Ministry of Education deals specifically with:

  1. Processing of Barbados Scholarships and Exhibitions;
  2. Processing of National Development Scholarship and Commonwealth Scholarships;
  3. Assisting the National Scholarship Committee with identifying priority areas for training in order to satisfy the human resources of the country.

The following person are eligible for awards of Barbados Scholarships or Exhibitions

  1. Citizens of Barbados;
  2. Children of citizens of Barbados;
  3. Children of persons who are ordinarily resident in Barbados and have been so resident for a period of at least seven (7) years.

To obtain a Barbados Scholarship, a student must have attained a pass in the General Paper examination and passes in no less than three (3) subjects at Grade 'A'. To obtain an exhibition a student must attain a pass in the General Paper examination and passes in no less than three (3) subjects, with at least no more than two (2) being at Grade 'A' and one at Grade 'B'.

National Development Scholarship

Provision is made for the award of a number of Scholarships to candidates pursuing courses considered critical for national development.

These Scholarships are given to provide training in scarce specialists areas and in areas identified as priorities in the socio-economic development of the country.

Selection is made through a process of interviews by the National Scholarship Committee. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-40.

The scholarships cover payment of tuition fees, health insurance, an annual living allowance, book allowance, warm clothing allowances and airfare.

Post-Graduate Scholarships

Commonwealth Scholarships to New Zealand, United Kingdom and Canada are offered for studies at the Masters or Doctoral level.

Candidates for studies in the United Kingdom and Canada must hold a degree or equivalent qualification, with at least upper second class honours.

Candidates for studies in New Zealand must hold an upper second class honours degree for Ph.D. study and at least a lower second class honours degree for studies at Masters level.

These scholarships cover payment of tuition and examination fees.

  1. Maintenance allowances;
  2.  Return airfare for scholars;
  3. A grant for books and clothing.
